SwiftKey Reportedly Acquired by Microsoft for $250 Million

Here’s a shocker for you. The Financial Times is reporting that Microsoft will acquire the wildly popular keyboard app, SwiftKey. If you’re unfamiliar with SwiftKey, it has been one of the best 3rd-party keyboards on Android for a very long time. People love it for the incredibly accurate predictive text, auto correction, themes, and emoji prediction.

How much is an app like SwiftKey worth? According to the report, $250 million. The co-founders will make around $30 million when everything is said and done. SwiftKey is not the first popular Android app that Microsoft has purchased. In 2015, Microsoft purchased Sunrise Calendar and Wunderlist. They haven’t done much with Wunderlist, but Sunrise is being folded into Outlook and the app is essentially dead.

So what will Microsoft do with SwiftKey? That’s the potentially scary question for loyal SwiftKey users. Microsoft could leave Swiftkey as is, like they are doing with Wunderlist, or they could shut down the app and use the technology for their own keyboard app. Only time will tell. How do you feel about this news? Do you use SwiftKey?
